The video for “Lover,” a song from Swift’s hotly anticipated seventh studio album of the same name, features the singer’s Reputation tour backup dancer Christian Owens. Owens’ casting makes him the first non-white love interest featured in one of the Pennsylvania native’s music videos.
Keeping with the theme of the song, the video commences with a young, curly-haired girl opening a present on Christmas Day. Inside the box is a snowglobe, which is promptly zoomed in on. Fans are given a glimpse into the world inside the magical gift, which is a house where Swift and Owens reside together.
From there, viewers are presented with a love story between Swift and Owens. Aspects of their home life unfold as they partake in activities, such as playing board games and dancing close together.
Swift premiered “Lover” in conjunction with a YouTube Originals livestream event, dubbed “Taylor Swift – Lover’s Lounge (Live),” that she hosted on her channel. Through this, the 29-year-old Grammy winner dished exclusive details about the making of her new record in a Q&A session with fans.
One Swiftie asked the singer what she regarded as the most challenging song that she has ever written. She revealed that “Soon You’ll Get Better,” the album’s 12th track which is rumored to be about her mother’s cancer relapse, was “really, really hard to write.”
“It was also just a family decision whether to even put it on the album,” she said in response to the fan’s inquiry. “I think songs like that, that are really hard for you to write emotionally, maybe they’re really hard to write and hard to sing because they’re really true.”
Swift noted that she is “so proud” of the emotional song. “I can’t sing it. It’s hard to just emotionally deal with that song. You’ll understand what I mean in like, a couple hours,” she added.
