Busy Philipps’s Freaks and Geeks throwback photos have us in our feelings
Busy Philipps just shared eight Freaks and Geeks pictures in honor of the show’s 20th anniversary, and honestly, we’re feeling more emotional about this high school reunion than we could ever be about our own.
Philipps posted the carousel on her Instagram yesterday, September 26th, in celebration of the show that launched her career. The collection of photos is a mix of promo pictures and behind-the-scenes snaps. The latter, Philipps says in her caption, were “taken by writer/producer @gabesachs who THANK GOD was obsessed even in 1999 with documenting every moment and always had a camera on him.”
Gabe Sachs, we’re thankful to you for these behind-the-scenes photos, too.
“Well. This is a big week for me in terms of TV show history, I guess. 20(TWENTY?!) years ago TODAY FREAKS AND GEEKS premiered on NBC,” her caption continues. “It feels like a million years ago and also two years ago. I’ve always remained humbled and grateful that this was my first job in Hollywood. And really, I think it’s as great today as it was 20 years ago and that really says something, I think,” she also writes.

Well. This is a big week for me in terms of TV show history, I guess. 20(TWENTY?!) years ago TODAY FREAKS AND GEEKS premiered on NBC. It feels like a million years ago and also two years ago. I’ve always remained humbled and grateful that this was my first job in Hollywood. And really, I think it’s as great today as it was 20 years ago and that really says something, I think. I love Kim Kelly with all my heart and I’m so glad I got to be her for a while and then also forever. Here are some of my favorite pictures. Except for this first one, which was a promo shot for NBC, all the pictures were taken by writer/producer @gabesachs who THANK GOD was obsessed even in 1999 with documenting every moment and always had a camera on him. Philipps starred as Kim Kelly, best friend to Linda Cardellini’s Lindsey Weir and on-again, off-again girlfriend to James Franco’s red-flag-riddled Daniel Desario. Daniel, in our opinion, remains one of the best on-screen depictions of “the bad boy you can’t resist falling for but who will inevitably crush your heart under the heel of his combat boot.”
“I love Kim Kelly with all my heart and I’m so glad I got to be her for a while and then also forever,” Philipps added.
Freaks and Geeks only aired for a single, 18-episode season from 1999 to 2000, but it gained a loyal cult following of fellow D&D nerds, wannabe punks, Kim Kelley-esque bad girls, people who love an oversized army jacket, and awkward teens in general (plus awkward adults, like us!). The show also made celebrities out of a teenaged Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and Martin Starr. You’ll spot some fun “before-they-were-super-famous” cameos, too, like Rashida Jones, Matt Czuchry, Shia Labeouf, and Leslie Mann.
That star-studded cast and crew joined Philipps on celebrating the Freaks and Geeks anniversary yesterday.
Showrunner Judd Apatow posted a serious treasure trove of behind-the-scenes photos in two Instagram carousels, and writer/unofficial set photographer Gabe Sachs’ Instagram is pretty much a Freaks and Geeks fan account now.

Meanwhile, John Francis Daley and Samm Levine, who played the protagonist Sam Weir and his “twerpy” best friend Neal Schweiber, respectively, both tweeted their disbelief that 1999 was somehow already 20 years ago.
Freaks and Geeks is 20 years old today. Where did all that time go? And who the hell is that little kid with the shark sweater? https://t.co/pqFPhlzho5— John Francis Daley (@JohnFDaley) September 25, 2019
Twenty. Years.Happy anniversary to the show that changed my life. Happy anniversary to the greatest fans in the world. Personally, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the Freaks and Geeks team will catch onto the reboot craze sweeping Hollywood right now—or, better yet, that Freaks and Geeks musical Paul Feig basically promised us last year.
